A Central Intelligence Agency operative named Plame had her cover blown by a journalist carrying water for the Bush administration in 2003. The White House leaked data that blew Plame’s cover in anger over public statements by her husband Joe Wilson saying V.P. Dick Cheney lied about reasons for attacking Iraq. The scandal became known as "Plamegate" and has been made to the film "Fair Game" opening Friday.
'Fair Game' involves Plame
"Fair Game" is the story of Plame’s CIA career falling apart. This only happened because her identity was revealed by journalist Robert Novak. Plamegate all started with a mission Plame's husband had to go on to see if Iraq was, as the White House claimed, getting nuclear material from Niger. Joe Wilson, a former United States ambassador, had been her husband. Wilson came up empty and went against White House wishes to suppress his story by writing a column in the New York Times titled “What I didn’t discover in Africa.”. Wilson’s column exposed that the Bush administration’s rationale for the Iraq War that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction was a fraud.
Bush administration betrays Central Intelligence Agency agent
The Bush administration, in a try to destroy Joe Wilson's credibility, ruined Plame’s CIA career. The whole thing was meant for making it look like Joe Wilson's wife, as a Central Intelligence Agency operative, got him the assignment although he didn't know what was going on. Plame's identity had been published after somebody revealed the identity to Novak. This was somebody in the White House. At the time Plame had been working undercover to combat nuclear proliferation. In addition to her identity, the business she used for cover and also the other agents who worked at the business were exposed.
Scooter Libby, fall guy for Plamegate
It’s illegal to tell somebody the identity of a CIA operative. This is even truer when that agent is undercover. All of the Bush operatives said they did not leak the data on Valerie Plame. This involves Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Richard Armitage, Rove and Dick Cheney. Libby ended up taking the fall. This had been so Cheney would be protected. He had been fined $250,000 and sentenced to 30 months in prison on March 6, 2007. Bush took action on July 2, 2007. Scooter Libby got a pardon. Some believe he was pardoned so that he would keep his mouth shut. To this day, nobody knows the truth about who betrayed Valerie Plame.
