The Department of Justice in court versus Arpaio, infamous lawman

The Grand Canyon State has been the main topic of discussion for a while. There continues to be no ruling on the SB1070 The Grand Canyon State law, allowing authorities to verify immigration status of numerous the Obama administration is challenging as a result of constitutional grounds of the law Governor Jan Brewer decried. The Department of Justice has decided to sue Sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio, raging on the Grand Canyon State and federal government feud. The Justice Department says that Sheriff Joe Arpaio has not cooperated with an investigation of civil rights abuses.

Suspected discrimination by Joe

Sheriff Joe Arpaio was supposedly trying to “sweep” illegal immigrants by targeting only Hispanics which is why the investigation began. The Maricopa County Sheriff sends deputies into intensely Hispanic areas, where they’ll stop any person for minor reasons, as outlined by the Los Angeles Times. Deputies were intended to check immigration status when there. This practice has been carried out since before the controversial Arizona immigration law was proposed. Sheriff Arpaio didn’t comply when asked by the Justice Department to give documentation of these sweeps. Allegedly, he denied federal investigators access to buildings and refused to hand over requested material.

Lawsuits are expected

The Maricopa Sheriff is no stranger to lawsuits. His jail is called Tent City and has tents in the desert with high fences with barbed wire around it, and many have sued him for family dying in this jail. ABC explains that an investigation because of corruption is being done by the grand jury for Sheriff Arpaio and also the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The Justice Department made the initial request for documents and other materials more than a year ago. All the documents about these sweeps were found by a federal judge to be ruined. The attorneys suing the Sheriff’s Office had each right to view the documents.
