According to Fox News, public educational institutions are all getting funding from the government to do these programs in 2010. September. 17 was formally named “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” in 2004, as the result of a law championed from the late West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd.
Earlier roots of Constitution Day
In 1940, Congress authorized President Franklin Roosevelt to decree the third Sunday of May as “I Am an American Day,” a celebration of those who had taken the steps and obtained American citizenship. In 1952, Congress passed a law that moved the date to Sept. 17 and renamed it “Citizenship Day.”. In 2004, the law passed by Byrd made sure that government employees learned about the Constitution. Also, any school receiving government aid was required to teach about the Constitution on Sept 17.
